The Nigerian House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to slash 50% of their monthly salaries to address the prevailing economic hardships facing the nation.

The decision, announced on Thursday, July 18, 2024, aims to demonstrate solidarity with Nigerians amidst widespread economic challenges.

Hon. Abbas Tajudeen disclosed that each lawmaker’s monthly salary averages around N600,000, underscoring the significant sacrifice being made to alleviate hunger and socio-economic distress.

The resolution emerged during a session where Deputy Speaker Kalu proposed the amendment to a motion aimed at addressing nationwide protests against economic difficulties. The proposal received overwhelming support during a voice vote, reflecting bipartisan consensus on the urgency of the issue.

“This gesture mirrors our commitment to national welfare, echoing similar actions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Kalu remarked, highlighting the positive impact of previous salary reductions.

Tajudeen praised the decision as a commendable step towards alleviating hunger, while urging the executive branch to consider similar sacrifices. The move underscores a collaborative effort to mitigate the effects of economic adversity on Nigerians.

Details on implementation and further legislative measures are expected to follow in subsequent parliamentary sessions.
