The House of Representatives in Nigeria has called on Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo to stop issuing airstrip licences to private individuals and organizations and to revoke any licences already granted.
This request followed a motion presented by Honourable Suleiman Gumi, who highlighted the recent approval of a private airstrip for Winners Chapel in Ogun State. Gumi referenced a 2014 incident involving a religious leader and a private jet allegedly used to transport millions of dollars to South Africa for arms purchases, raising concerns about the potential security risks associated with private airstrips.
Members of the House expressed worry that allowing private airstrips could exacerbate the country’s security challenges.
