In a statement marking Democracy Day and 25 years of unbroken democracy, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, congratulated Nigerians and assured them of more dividends of democracy to come.
Abbas noted that Nigeria has made significant progress in the past 25 years, with democracy taking root in the country. He acknowledged that while there is still room for improvement, the country has continued to grow in democratic experience and practice.
“The past 25 years have been a journey of learning and growth for our democracy,” Abbas said. “We have navigated the learning curves successfully, and our democracy has come to stay.”
The speaker encouraged Nigerians to contribute to the country’s growth and development, promising that Nigeria will become a nation citizens can be proud of. “Let us work together to build a nation that we can all be proud of,” he said. “A nation that provides opportunities for all, regardless of tribe, religion, gender, or age.”
Abbas urged support for the government at all levels and law-abiding citizenship, emphasizing collective responsibility for the success of government plans and programs. “We must work together to make our government succeed,” he said. “By doing so, we will build a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.”
This year’s celebration coincides with the one-year anniversary of the 10th National Assembly, inaugurated on June 13, 2023. Abbas praised the assembly’s achievements over the past year, saying, “We have worked tirelessly to pass laws and resolutions that benefit the Nigerian people. We will continue to do so, ensuring that our democracy delivers on its promises.”
