In Kano, Nigeria, a faction of demonstrators ignited chaos on August 1, 2024, as they set fire to the newly built National Communications Commission (NCC) office on State Road.

This act of arson occurred during a large-scale protest demanding government accountability and freedom.

Hundreds of protesters donned green face caps emblazoned with the word “Peace,” and marched through the city, distinguishing themselves from those involved in looting and vandalism. The “Peace” protesters chanted, “Mu yanci mukeso ba ruwan mu da kayan kowa,” which translates to, “We need freedom from the government, we don’t want anybody’s properties.” They aimed to protect commercial properties from being destroyed.

However, despite their efforts, many businesses were looted and set ablaze, including the NCC office, which was slated for imminent commissioning. The office was severely damaged, with windows shattered and flames engulfing the structure.

One of the “Peace” protesters, speaking to journalists, vowed to continue their efforts to prevent further damage. “We are doing our best to stop the looting and destruction of innocent people’s properties,” the protester said.
