A group of protesters on Tuesday marched to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), demanding the prosecution of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.

The protesters, under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, also called for a thorough investigation into NNPCL’s transactions over the past five years. Led by their convener, Kabir Matazu, the group expressed disappointment that despite President Bola Tinubu’s removal of Kyari and the entire NNPCL board on April 2, 2025, no steps have been taken to probe alleged corruption during his tenure.

The group raised concerns over the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, alleging that billions of dollars were spent without transparency. They also questioned a reported $2 billion debt owed by NNPCL to Matrix Energy, which is allegedly being serviced through daily crude oil allocations.

“Nigerians are disillusioned that the President has only stopped at removing the former leadership without investigating Kyari’s management,” Matazu said. “Billions were spent on refinery repairs, yet the figures don’t add up. Why is NNPCL indebted to Matrix Energy, and why is this debt being settled with crude oil?”

The protesters urged the AGF to ensure accountability, recover misused funds, and prevent past mistakes from recurring.
