Protests erupted in Kathmandu, Nepal, sparked by public outrage over a government-imposed ban on social media platforms. Demonstrators, many from the younger generation identifying as “Gen Z,” defied a curfew and stormed the Nepalese parliament building on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

They broke into the complex, setting fire to the structure, which led to thick plumes of smoke visible across the capital.

This violent escalation followed a day of deadly clashes between protesters and police, in which security forces used live ammunition, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse large crowds. The confrontations resulted in the deaths of at least 19 protesters and injuries to more than 100 others.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amidst the unrest, a move that was met with jubilation by demonstrators, who filled the streets waving flags and chanting slogans.

Despite his resignation, protests continued with demonstrators setting fire to residences of political figures, government buildings, and the headquarters of the Nepali Congress, the nation’s largest political party.

The unrest represents one of Nepal’s most significant crises in decades, fueled not only by the social media ban but also by widespread dissatisfaction with corruption, unemployment, and economic hardship facing ordinary Nepalis.

The ban on 26 social media platforms intended to stifle dissent was lifted after the protests intensified, but public anger had already transformed into a broader anti-government movement.

The Nepalese army has been deployed to restore order in Kathmandu, and the government warned against further violence and vandalism. International observers including the United Nations human rights chief have called for restraint and investigations into the deaths of protesters.

Neighboring India expressed concern over the instability, emphasizing the importance of peace and prosperity in Nepal.

The protests exposed deep societal grievances and marked a turning point in Nepal’s democratic experience, with the youth playing a central role in challenging the entrenched political system.
