A vast collection of Princess Diana’s personal items has sold at auction for $5.5 million, exceeding initial estimates. Julien’s Auctions announced the impressive results after closing the sale on Thursday.
The “Princess Diana’s Elegance and Royal Collection” auction, held by Julien’s, featured over 50 items including evening gowns, suits, shoes, hats, handbags, and personal letters from the late Princess. The event also included memorabilia from other British royal family members such as Queen Victoria, Princess Margaret, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Highlighting the auction was a magenta silk and lace evening gown worn by Diana in 1987, which sold for $910,000—more than four times its projected value of $200,000. The gown, designed by Victor Edelstein, surpassed expectations, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Diana’s wardrobe. “We anticipated significant interest, but the final sale prices have truly reflected Diana’s lasting legacy,” a Julien’s Auctions spokesperson commented.
Other notable items included Diana’s emerald green satin Kurt Geiger pumps, which fetched $390,000—vastly exceeding their estimated value of $2,000 to $4,000—and a midnight-blue tulle diamante star gown she wore to “The Phantom of the Opera” premiere, selling for $780,000.
Among the more personal items was a handwritten letter Diana penned to former housekeeper Maud Pendrey. Written while she was expecting Prince Harry, the letter sold for $44,450. It reflects Diana’s warmth and personal touch, mentioning the impending arrival of her second son: “With the baby arriving soon, our lives seem to be very busy, but we’d have it no other way!”
Royal memorabilia from other family members also saw significant interest. A diamond watch pendant gifted by King George VI to Princess Margaret sold for $78,000, while a pair of the Duke of Windsor’s dark green slippers fetched $5,850. Additionally, one of Queen Victoria’s embroidered silk handkerchiefs, dating from 1840, went for $1,625.
