
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a 4.19% increase in the price of 5kg cooking gas, with the average price rising from ₦6,430 in August to ₦6,699.63 in September 2024. The report, published in Abuja, shows that the price has surged by 59.9% year-on-year, compared to ₦4,189.96 in September 2023.
According to the NBS, the highest prices were recorded in Rivers State at ₦7,285.71, followed by Gombe at ₦7,271.88, while the lowest prices were seen in Kebbi at ₦5,950.00.
The bureau also noted a rise in the cost of refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder, which increased by 4.89% month-on-month from ₦15,552.56 in August to ₦16,313.43 in September 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the price jumped by 76.41% from ₦9,247.40 in September 2023. Rivers again topped the list with the highest price of ₦17,992.86, while Adamawa recorded the lowest at ₦13,983.33.
In a similar trend, the average retail price for kerosene per litre rose to ₦1,957.44 in September, a 5.97% increase compared to August. The report showed that Abuja had the highest price at ₦2,816.67, while Bayelsa recorded the lowest at ₦1,416.67.
The NBS highlighted the overall impact on consumers, revealing a sharp increase in the cost of essential fuels across various regions of the country.
