President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his previously scheduled national broadcast for Democracy Day, which was set for 7am on June 12. Instead, he will deliver his Democracy Day address directly from the National Assembly during a special joint session.

The change was announced by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, who explained that the adjustment was due to the president’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly joint session.

Other activities planned for Democracy Day will proceed as scheduled, but the traditional military parade has also been cancelled. The revised program includes:

  • No Presidential National Broadcast
  • No Democracy Day Parade
  • President Tinubu’s address at the National Assembly joint session at 12 noon
  • A public lecture on Democracy Day at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, at 4 pm

The theme for the public lecture is “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.” Only accredited State House correspondents will cover the event.

President Tinubu’s address from the National Assembly marks a shift from the usual national broadcast, and he is expected to highlight Nigeria’s democratic journey, honor the heroes of democracy, and outline his vision for the country’s future. Security has been heightened at the National Assembly complex in anticipation of the event, and the day’s activities will proceed without the traditional parade.
