The Presidency has reacted to the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, mocked former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, saying the coalition he was building has disintegrated.
Onanuga stated that Atiku’s political future looks bleak following the defection, implying that the loss of key figures like Okowa undermines Atiku’s efforts to build a strong opposition coalition. Okowa, notably, was Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 Presidential election, making his defection particularly significant.
The defection was officially announced in Asaba, the Delta State capital, with Senator James Manager explaining that the decision was driven by the need to join a more stable and progressive platform. The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Aniagwu Charles, also confirmed the governor’s defection, highlighting the desire to further advance the state’s development, security, and welfare.
This development marks a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape and could have broader implications for the national political scene, particularly for Atiku’s future plans.
