Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga clarified that President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria did not purchase a brand-new presidential jet but instead opted for a refurbished Airbus A330. Onanuga, appearing on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, explained that some aircraft in Nigeria’s presidential fleet, such as a Boeing B737-700 bought during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, are now nearly two decades old and costly to maintain.

Instead of investing heavily in repairs, Tinubu sought National Assembly approval for a refurbished jet to reduce maintenance expenses. Onanuga emphasized, “The plane is Nigeria’s property, not Tinubu’s,” adding that it will serve future presidents as well.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Critics argue that acquiring any jet during economic hardship shows a lack of empathy, especially as Nigerians grapple with escalating food and fuel costs.
