David Coote, a Premier League referee, has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after an investigation into serious allegations against him. The PGMOL announced the decision on Monday, citing “serious breaches” of his employment contract that made his position “untenable.”
In a statement titled “Statement—David Coote,” the PGMOL confirmed his dismissal, adding, “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract. Supporting his welfare continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to ensuring he receives the assistance he requires.”
The investigation followed multiple controversies, including a video from November allegedly showing Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jürgen Klopp. The remarks reportedly referenced a contentious 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which Coote officiated. Klopp had criticized Coote’s decisions during the match, leading to backlash.
Additional scrutiny arose after The Sun published photos on November 13 allegedly showing Coote using a white powder during the European Championships. UEFA and the FA also launched separate investigations into his conduct.
One notable accusation from 2019 involved claims that Coote discussed issuing a yellow card before a Championship match between Leeds and West Brom. While Coote denied the allegations, describing them as “false and defamatory,” they contributed to the growing controversy surrounding him.
Coote, who has the right to appeal the decision, maintains his denial of wrongdoing. His dismissal underscores growing concerns over the integrity of football officiating, with the PGMOL emphasizing its commitment to upholding high standards within the sport.
