Pope Leo has publicly condemned the horrific massacre that took place in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, which left around 200 people dead.
Speaking on Sunday, June 15, 2025, just before delivering the Angelus prayer, the new Pope expressed deep sorrow for the victims of the attack carried out by suspected herdsmen between the night of Friday, June 13, and the early hours of Saturday, June 14.
The Pope highlighted that many of the victims were internally displaced persons who had sought refuge at the local Catholic mission. He prayed earnestly for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria, emphasizing his thoughts for the rural Christian communities in Benue State, which have been repeatedly targeted by violence.
In response to the massacre, Amnesty International Nigeria called on the Nigerian government to immediately halt the ongoing bloodshed in Benue and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The Pope’s remarks have drawn international attention to the crisis in Benue State, underscoring the urgent need for protection of vulnerable communities and lasting peace in the region.
