The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced plans to establish a full drone system to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges. Speaking at the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Ibadan, Egbetokun stated that the drone system will enable the police to monitor the entire country from its headquarters in Abuja, capturing criminal activities in real-time.

The system aims to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities by providing real-time intelligence to the police. Egbetokun also announced the establishment of a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in all states to focus on kidnapping and banditry.

The police have already seen success with the deployment of SIS in the Federal Capital Territory, leading to the arrest of kidnappers and bandits and the recovery of weapons.

Dedicated anti-kidnapping units have also been established in various states, conducting successful rescue operations and arresting perpetrators.

Egbetokun acknowledged challenges facing the force, including manpower shortages, inadequate equipment, public distrust, and insufficient funding. However, he pledged the force’s commitment to protecting citizens’ lives and property.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, commended the IGP’s visionary leadership, while the acting Director of TCEMS, Dr. Benjamin Aluko, emphasized the need for constructive discussions to reshape the country’s security situation.
