Lagos State Police Command has summoned three officers accused of extorting ₦1 million from three National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The alleged extortion incident, which occurred in the Surulere area of Lagos, surfaced on social media late Friday, September 27, 2024, sparking public outrage.

A social media user, Oluyemi Fasipe, shared a series of videos showing the encounter between the corps members and police officers. According to Fasipe, the officers forcefully took ₦1 million from the corps members after threatening them with firearms and detaining them at the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House Area C Police Command in Lagos.

“Dear @BenHundeyin, your officers today in Surulere extorted ₦1 million from three corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the KAFARU OLUWOLE TINUBU HOUSE AREA C POLICE COMMAND where they were robbed. Their offence was the absence of a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil!” Fasipe tweeted.

The videos shared online show the officers searching the corps members’ car, leading to a heated exchange. At one point, the officers prevented the occupants from making phone calls and ordered them to stop filming the incident.

In response to the viral footage, the Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced that the officers involved had been summoned for questioning, and their trial had commenced.

“The men have been summoned, and their trial has commenced. We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial,” Hundeyin stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from social media users, with many calling for justice for the corps members involved.
