Officers of the Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos, have upheld their commitment to integrity by rejecting a $100,000 (approximately N174 million) bribe offered by a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, Patrick Akpoguma.
The suspect, accused of operating a sophisticated internet fraud network involving romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and identity theft, was apprehended following a detailed investigation initiated by reports from Chevron Drive, Lekki.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade disclosed that Akpoguma impersonated prominent individuals, including U.S. Army Colonel Matt Herbert and cryptocurrency expert Adam Taggart, to defraud unsuspecting victims.
“Patrick Akpoguma admitted to being involved in romance scams and cryptocurrency-related fraud. He went as far as purchasing a silicone face and hand mask worth $11,200 to deceive his victims,” said AIG Fayoade during a press briefing.
The suspect attempted to bribe the officers with $100,000 during his arrest. The police, led by CSP Ngozi Braid, played along to gather evidence while continuing their investigation. Akpoguma later confessed to earning over $500,000 from fraudulent activities within three years, which he used to acquire luxury assets, including a GLE Mercedes-Benz worth N100 million.
Expressing remorse, Akpoguma praised the police for their professionalism. “This is the first time I’ve had contact with the police, and they’ve demonstrated integrity and credibility. I regret my actions,” he said.
AIG Fayoade applauded the officers’ diligence and urged the public to report suspicious activities. “The investigation is concluded, and the suspect will soon face prosecution. I commend the officers for their transparency and commitment to duty,” he stated.
This case highlights the growing sophistication of internet fraud and the need for continued vigilance by law enforcement and the public alike.
