Authorities have identified 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, originally from Towson, Maryland, as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The New York Police Department confirmed this on Monday.
Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a McDonald’s employee recognized him. He was found in possession of a firearm, a silencer, and a manifesto expressing his disdain for the healthcare industry.
“At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a press briefing.
Thompson was shot in Midtown Manhattan last week while attending a work conference. UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest medical insurers in the U.S., described Thompson’s death as a “tragic loss” for the company and his family.
Mangione has not yet been charged with Thompson’s murder but is being held on firearms charges while investigations continue.
