The Anambra State Police Command has established a special monitoring unit to supervise operations of the state security outfit Agunechemba, following Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a civilian during a traffic altercation in Nnewi.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu appointed Deputy Commissioner Mantu Chong to lead the oversight team after an Agunechemba operative allegedly fired the stray bullet that killed Chiamaka Okeke at Ibeto Junction. Eyewitnesses reported that security personnel attempted to forcefully clear gridlocked traffic for their convoy when the shooting occurred.

State Police Spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating: “We have escalated identification efforts to Agunechemba’s leadership to pinpoint both the patrol team and specific operative involved.” The command has launched a full investigation while appealing for public calm.

CP Orutugu emphasized the force’s commitment to accountability, noting existing community policing structures and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. “We’re working closely with security stakeholders to ensure justice,” Ikenga added, reaffirming ongoing operational reviews to enhance public safety across Anambra State.

The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about security personnel conduct during operations, prompting the police command to implement stricter supervision of all state security outfits. Authorities promise regular updates as investigations progress.
