The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has rescinded the invitation previously issued to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning in Abuja regarding a violent incident during recent Sallah celebrations.

Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi announced Sunday that the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders, though specific names were not disclosed. The IGP has instead directed Kano State police authorities to obtain the Emir’s statement locally regarding the March 30 altercation at Kofar Mata Eid Ground that left one palace guard dead.

Egbetokun emphasized the move reflects the police force’s commitment to maintaining neutrality and avoiding perceptions of political interference in traditional institution matters. “Our actions must always align with professional standards and community sensitivities,” Adejobi stated, adding that the adjustment in approach demonstrates the police leadership’s responsiveness to constructive dialogue.

The initial summons had drawn widespread criticism from civil society and business leaders, including human rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu and banker Atedo Peterside, who characterized an Abuja interrogation as unnecessary harassment of the traditional ruler.

Security analysts suggest the revised approach may help de-escalate tensions in Kano, where the emirate’s affairs often carry significant political weight. The Kano State Police Command is expected to coordinate with palace officials to arrange the Emir’s statement at a mutually convenient time and location.

The police reaffirmed their dedication to thorough but culturally sensitive investigations, noting that a 20-year-old suspect remains in custody while inquiries continue into the fatal Sallah day violence.
