The Lagos State Police Command has declared Dr. Idara Bassey wanted following the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, during a buttock enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.
The police confirmed this development on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Abiola, a resident of Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, had gone to the clinic on Monday for a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure. The surgery, intended to enhance buttock size through fat transfer, took a tragic turn when a nurse, allegedly acting on Dr. Bassey’s orders, administered an injection that caused Abiola to lose consciousness and start gasping for breath. The driver who brought Abiola to the clinic reported the emergency.
The clinic’s owner is currently on the run, and the nurse who administered the injection has been arrested. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Dr. Bassey is considered a suspect in the case and is also on the run.
The BBL procedure has faced scrutiny due to its risks, which include potential complications from injections and anesthesia. Despite warnings from medical experts, many patients continue to undergo the procedure, driven by its popularity on social media.
