Tensions are high in the Umuahala and Umuorie villages of Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area, following the tragic death of Miss Vivian Ocheze Munachi. She was allegedly pushed from a crane by a Chinese national, Mr. G.Z. Zhen, who serves as the manager of Inner Galaxy, a steel manufacturing company.
The incident, which occurred at the company premises, has sparked outrage among the local youths and elders, who accuse the Chinese manager of subjecting Nigerian staff to harsh labor conditions and inhumane treatment. There are also claims that the company pays meager wages, even for overtime work.
Details regarding the motive behind Mr. Zhen’s alleged action remain unclear. However, the death of Miss Munachi has led to an outpouring of anger from the host communities. On Monday, agitated youths stormed the company in search of the Chinese manager, only to be met with a barricade formed by armed security personnel protecting the factory.
ASP Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, confirmed that the police had received reports of the incident and that an investigation is underway. “We got a report alleging that Mr. G.Z. Zhen, through his actions, led to the death of one of his staff, Miss Vivian Ocheze Munachi. An investigation is ongoing,” ASP Chinaka stated.
The situation remains tense as the communities await further developments from the ongoing investigation.
