The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance, following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Nigeria, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, emphasized that all vehicle owners must possess valid third-party insurance before operating on public roads. She urged motorists without the required policy to comply immediately to avoid penalties.

This enforcement follows the IGP’s announcement on January 10, when he received the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Omosehin, from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM). The directive, which took effect on February 1, is part of efforts to ensure road safety and financial protection for accident victims.

Adeh explained that the third-party insurance policy is designed to cover damages to other people’s vehicles, property, or bodily injuries resulting from accidents involving the insured vehicle. She noted that compliance would reduce the financial burden on vehicle owners and provide compensation to accident victims.

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has instructed officers enforcing the directive to remain professional, courteous, and firm while ensuring motorists adhere to the regulation. He also warned against any form of harassment or extortion of motorists.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or misconduct by officers through the FCT Police emergency lines at 08061581938 or 08032003913.
