Tamayo Perry, a beloved lifeguard and actor, tragically passed away on Sunday, June 23, following a shark attack while surfing near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.
Perry, 49, was known for his work as a City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard and his roles in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush.
Authorities responded to the incident just before 1 p.m. local time. Shayne Enright from the Honolulu Emergency Services Department confirmed the lifeguard team reached Perry via jet ski and brought him to shore. Despite their efforts, Perry was pronounced dead shortly after.
Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as a well-known and well-loved figure in the community, both for his lifeguard service and his professional surfing achievements. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also expressed his condolences, highlighting Perry’s respected status as a “legendary waterman.”
