Human rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu and businessman Atedo Peterside have strongly criticized the Nigerian Police Force’s decision to summon Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II to Abuja for questioning regarding a fatal incident during Sallah celebrations.

The police invitation, issued by the Force Intelligence Department, requires the Emir to appear on April 8 concerning a March 30 altercation at Kofar Mata Eid Ground that resulted in the death of a palace guard and several injuries.

Peterside, founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank, condemned the move as unnecessary overreach: “Why can’t the Kano State Police Commissioner handle this locally? Transporting a traditional ruler across states for questioning reeks of harassment and sets a dangerous precedent.”

Odinkalu echoed these concerns, suggesting political motives: “This appears to be a deliberate attempt to destabilize Kano using police authority. Such actions risk escalating tensions unnecessarily.”

While Kano police have already arrested a 20-year-old suspect and summoned a palace official, critics argue that involving the Emir directly – particularly through an Abuja-based interrogation – exceeds normal investigative protocols.

The development has raised broader questions about police conduct and respect for traditional institutions, with observers warning against actions that could inflame the historically sensitive Kano emirate.

As the April 8 date approaches, many are calling for restraint and proper adherence to due process in handling the matter.
