Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has commended Northern Nigeria’s traditional rulers for their strong stance against worsening insecurity in the region and across the country.

Obi’s praise came in response to the monarchs’ recent “Enough is Enough” declaration, where they demanded urgent action to address persistent violence and killings. In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the former Anambra State governor described the rulers’ intervention as “courageous and timely.”

“I fully agree with them that we’ve reached a point where ‘Enough is Enough’ regarding the endless killings and security challenges facing our nation,” Obi wrote. “Their collective voice highlights the critical need for decisive measures to protect lives and restore peace in our communities.”

The former presidential candidate urged federal and state governments to collaborate closely with traditional rulers, noting their unique position as grassroots leaders who understand local realities. He praised the monarchs for offering counsel to regional governors, calling it “true leadership” that demonstrates deep concern for their people’s welfare.

Obi emphasized that the traditional rulers’ declaration should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders. “We must unite across political divides to implement lasting solutions that tackle the root causes of our security challenges,” he stated.

The statement concluded with Obi’s call for collective action: “Let us work together to build a Nigeria where every citizen feels safe, valued, and empowered.”

The Northern traditional rulers’ unprecedented declaration comes amid rising attacks by bandits and insurgents across the region, with recent incidents claiming dozens of lives in rural communities. Their intervention has been widely seen as a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis.
