Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has committed to fulfilling the bail conditions set for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court in a defamation case involving prominent legal icon Afe Babalola. The court imposed stringent conditions, including a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own property), surrendering his passport, and a restriction on media engagements.
The announcement was made by Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign, via a statement on Friday. Yunusa revealed that Obi’s decision stemmed from his respect for the rule of law and commitment to ensuring due process.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa said.
Obi also expressed gratitude to the judiciary and other parties involved in the matter, emphasizing his desire for a resolution that aligns with legal standards and benefits all stakeholders.
