Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stepped into the controversy involving human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola. Obi visited Afe Babalola in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to appeal for leniency toward Farotimi, who is currently remanded at an Ekiti prison following a legal dispute with the legal luminary.
Farotimi was granted bail on Monday by the Ekiti State High Court in the sum of N50 million and a surety in like sum. The activist’s detention had sparked widespread criticism of Babalola, who reportedly petitioned the police over alleged defamation by Farotimi.
A social activist, Moses Paul, shared details of Obi’s visit on social media, stating, “Today, Mr. @PeterObi traveled from Lagos to Ekiti State, dedicating the entire day to meaningful engagements. He visited Aare Afe Babalola at his office within Afe Babalola University, where they had in-depth discussions on critical issues, including the situation of activist and lawyer @DeleFarotimi.”
Paul further revealed that Obi also visited the prison where Farotimi is being held. “In a private meeting, he expressed solidarity and engaged in a candid exchange aimed at addressing the prevailing challenges,” Paul wrote.
Farotimi had earlier raised concerns about his safety, alleging threats to his life. Meanwhile, public outcry continues to mount, with many calling for his immediate release.
The case has attracted significant attention, with groups like SERAP and activists, including Aisha Yesufu, urging the government to ensure justice and fairness in the matter.
