Nigerian filmmaker and producer Seun Egbegbe has shared his traumatic experience during his time in prison, revealing the harsh realities of life behind bars.
In a recent interview on the ‘Talk to B’ podcast with actress Biola Adebayo, Egbegbe described the constant fear he lived in while in jail, where he fervently prayed for survival. “People died every day in that prison. It is not a good place. I told God that if you truly exist, then I must leave here alive,” Egbegbe recounted, highlighting the daily deaths that occurred among inmates.
He continued, “If you go and return, thank God. Know that He loves you and has given you a second chance to live.” Egbegbe also spoke of the ‘welcome cell,’ a holding area for new prisoners, where, according to him, if 20 people were brought in overnight, at least two would be found dead by the following morning.
Seun Egbegbe’s legal troubles began in February 2017 when he was accused of obtaining money by pretence from 40 Bureau De Change operators to exchange large sums of naira into foreign currencies. He was charged with fraud involving N39,098,100, $90,000, and £12,550. Although the court granted him N5 million bail, he was unable to meet the conditions and remained in custody.
After spending five years and eight months in prison, Egbegbe was finally acquitted in 2022.
