The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed victory in 30 out of the 31 local government areas during the local government elections held on October 5, as announced by Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).
The only local government area won by the All Progressives Congress (APC) was Essien Udim, the home turf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The PDP’s success in securing a majority of the councillorship seats further solidifies its status as the ruling party in the state.
In a statement, the APC has contested the election results, alleging that the process was marred by widespread rigging, violence, and theft of electoral materials orchestrated by the PDP. “The integrity and credibility of the election were compromised in favor of the PDP,” said OtoAbasi Udo, APC’s state publicity secretary.
The press release detailed the APC’s concerns, noting, “AKISIEC, like any other SIEC in Nigeria, is controlled and managed by the State Government, which creates a perceived influence on the electoral outcomes.” Udo added that the elections were characterized by acute shortages of voting materials, disenfranchising many accredited voters, alongside claims of financial inducements aimed at voters by the PDP.
Despite these challenges, Udo commended APC supporters for their unwavering dedication. “The Party, ably led by Obong Stephen Leo Ntukekpo, expresses sincere thanks for the tireless support of our great Party,” he stated, emphasizing their commitment to contesting the results. He also expressed optimism about future local government elections following a Supreme Court judgment that reinstated full autonomy to local government councils.
