A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as Nigeria’s best hope for economic recovery, dismissing calls for the veteran politician to abandon his presidential ambitions. Segun Adewale, former Lagos State PDP chairman, made the assertion during an exclusive interview in Lagos, countering recent criticisms from within the party.
Adewale, popularly known as Aeroland, challenged recent statements by PDP figures including Bode George and ex-Governor Ayo Fayose who advised against Atiku’s 2027 candidacy. “Atiku has been tested in governance and understands Nigeria’s challenges better than wealth-seeking politicians,” Adewale stated, emphasizing the former VP’s economic expertise and political experience.
The PDP stalwart accused internal critics of prioritizing personal interests over national progress, alleging they “work for their stomachs rather than Nigeria.” He defended Atiku’s proposed opposition coalition as the most viable strategy to unseat the ruling APC, asserting that no single party – including Labour Party – currently possesses the strength to achieve this alone.
Adewale also highlighted systemic electoral flaws, citing his own alleged electoral deprivations in Lagos as evidence of the need for comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of 2027. “Nigerians desperately need competent leadership,” he maintained, positioning Atiku as the candidate best equipped to deliver economic revival and good governance.
The comments come amid intensifying PDP internal debates about its 2027 strategy, with Atiku’s supporters pushing for his candidacy while others advocate for generational change. Political observers note the exchange reflects deeper divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party as it seeks to regain national prominence.
