Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has shattered the Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category by lifting an astounding 145kg. Her impressive feat surpasses the previous record held by fellow Nigerian, Lucy Ejike.

Mark’s performance has put Nigeria on the brink of its first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with one lift remaining. She is currently leading the competition, while her closest competitor is attempting 138kg on her final lift. Mark plans to extend her record further with a final attempt of 147kg.

Reflecting on the country’s achievements, Team Nigeria has consistently excelled in powerlifting and athletics at the Paralympics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Nigeria won ten medals, including four golds. Nigerian powerlifters like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo have set world records and won multiple gold medals, solidifying the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in the sport.

Nigeria’s continued success underscores the nation’s commitment to supporting and developing its para-athletes, with Mark’s record-breaking performance serving as the latest testament to that dedication.
