The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs. Annett Gunther, has revealed that more than 4,000 Nigerians are currently engaged in studies and employment in Germany. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Gunther highlighted the robust educational and professional exchange between the two countries.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers at least 1,000 scholarships annually to Nigerian students. Many courses in Germany are taught in English, making it accessible to international students. However, a basic knowledge of German is recommended for daily life in the country.

Gunther acknowledged the delays in student visa issuance and assured that the German government is working to enhance visa processing capacities. “We want them to come. So, there is also something to do on our side to improve our capacities on visa issuance,” she stated.

German universities are known for their high standards and international recognition. University education in Germany is either free or relatively inexpensive compared to other English-speaking countries, making it an attractive option for Nigerian students.

Beyond students, over 80,000 Nigerians live and work in Germany, contributing significantly to its economy. The ambassador emphasized Germany’s openness to foreign workers due to its shrinking population and workforce shortages. “We are happy with everybody who comes to support us,” she said.
