In a major shift, over ten traditional and community leaders from Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area have stepped down from their positions, citing a commitment to addressing pressing issues in the region.
Led by Jamilu Gobir, the Ubandoma of Sarkin Gobir, the leaders announced their decision to join forces with Senator Ibrahim Lamido of Sokoto East to tackle ongoing challenges of insecurity, poverty, and educational setbacks in Sokoto’s eastern zone, Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the leaders, Gobir emphasized that the region urgently needs targeted economic interventions following years of disruption caused by bandit activities. “Beyond politics, the eastern zone of Sokoto needs deliberate efforts to liberate the region economically,” Gobir stated, adding that the leaders are aligning with Senator Lamido as he “works to free the region from the shackles of insecurity and poverty.”
The resignations come amid a factional split within Sokoto’s All Progressives Congress (APC), which has seen the party divide into two camps. One faction is led by Senator Lamido, while the other remains under Senator Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto North, former state governor and mentor to current Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
To further display their allegiance, approximately 40 APC members loyal to Lamido have also resigned from various positions under Governor Aliyu’s administration, signaling their support for Lamido as the party’s leader in the region.
