A pregnant woman has tragically passed away after allegedly being refused treatment at a private hospital in Lagos because she could not afford a ₦500,000 deposit.
The heartbreaking incident, which first surfaced on Instagram in February, recently gained traction on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). A viral video shows the expectant mother, visibly weak, inside a car while her husband, Akinbobola Folajimi, desperately tries to keep her conscious.
“My goodness, Kemi, look at me. Stay strong, think about your kids, please,” he pleaded in the video.
Folajimi later shared that after being turned away by the private hospital, they rushed to a government hospital in Epe, but the distance proved fatal, and his wife did not survive the journey.
“Private hospitals in Nigeria… The doctor told me to deposit ₦500k, and I begged him to start treatment while I found the money, but they drove us out like they didn’t care,” he wrote. “They knew Epe was too far, yet they sent us there. Before we got to the hospital, she was gone.”
The video has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians expressing their anger over the state of the healthcare system and the prioritization of money over human lives.
Authorities have yet to respond to the incident, but public outcry continues to grow, calling for urgent reforms in medical emergency policies across the country.
