Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that his support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections was not motivated by personal gain.
El-Rufai was among the Northern governors in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who advocated for a Southern successor to former President Muhammadu Buhari, leading to Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s candidate. Tinubu later won the election, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
Recently, El-Rufai has been critical of Tinubu’s administration, leading to social media clashes between him and some presidential aides. This comes amid claims that the President and his allies had previously sought El-Rufai’s backing but have since distanced themselves from him.
Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that Tinubu’s supporters once praised him but later dismissed his role in the election, El-Rufai reiterated that his support was purely for the sake of “God, country, and party.”
“We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well,” he wrote.
