Osun State Governor in Nigeria, Ademola Adeleke, has directed an immediate investigation and clemency process for a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly stealing a fowl.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 by the Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke mandated the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to intervene and ensure the young man is considered for prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. Consequently, I have directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to commence a full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man,” the statement read.
The Governor emphasized that Osun State stands for justice and fairness, pledging urgent attention to the matter to uphold the sanctity of life.
The case drew public outrage after the parents of the young man, a medical student, shared their plight in an interview with actress Biola Adebayo. The distraught parents claimed their son was falsely accused of stealing a fowl and unjustly sentenced to death.
Governor Adeleke assured the public of his administration’s commitment to justice, promising a thorough review of the case.
