Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has urged President Bola Tinubu to remove ministers and security chiefs who are not performing effectively, stating they are hindering Nigeria’s progress. Kalu made these remarks during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday, emphasizing that bold steps are needed to address the challenges facing the country.
Kalu stated that some individuals working with President Tinubu should be relieved of their duties, both in the security sector and among the ministers. He emphasized that Tinubu must be courageous enough to sack these ministers, as most of them, based on his appraisal, are not contributing effectively. Kalu also asserted that some security chiefs are not performing their duties well and should be replaced if Nigeria aims to overcome its current challenges.
Kalu acknowledged President Tinubu’s efforts to implement economic reforms but noted that ordinary Nigerians are yet to experience the benefits. He pointed out that the changes are trickling down slowly and could take another one to two years to materialize. Insurgency and insecurity across Nigeria are preventing people from returning to their farms, which is hindering economic growth.
Kalu’s comments come against the backdrop of President Tinubu’s appointment of 45 ministers in May 2023, the largest cabinet since 1999. In October 2024, Tinubu made significant changes, sacking five ministers, appointing seven new ones, and reassigning ten others. Despite these changes, Nigerians continue to grapple with hardship due to the removal of fuel subsidies, rising prices, and ongoing economic reforms.
