The African Union Simulation has officially nominated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, as the Grand Patron of Traditional Institutions in Africa ahead of the 2025 Africa Day celebration, which will be hosted in Abuja. The nomination was formally conveyed to the monarch during a high-level delegation’s visit to the Ooni’s palace.

The delegation was led by Dr. Piero Omatseye, Africa Coordinator of the African Union Simulation and Director of Parliament for Africa, Caribbean & Pacific Joint Sessions. Speaking on behalf of youths and leaders from 54 African countries, Dr. Omatseye highlighted the Ooni’s continental influence, visionary leadership, and relentless promotion of culture and youth empowerment across Africa as key reasons for his unanimous nomination.

Africa Day, commemorating the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) on May 25, 1963, symbolizes the unity and collective progress of the continent. The 2025 celebration in Abuja is set to be a grand event featuring African Heads of State, ministers, resident ambassadors, global development partners, and experts in sectors such as agriculture, energy, technology, and economics. The event aims to empower young Africans through a blend of cultural traditions, training expeditions, and youth empowerment initiatives.

In response to the nomination, the Ooni expressed heartfelt gratitude, affirming his commitment to youth empowerment and cultural leadership. “I thank the entire delegation and African youth who have traveled from across the continent to present this honour. I pray for the success of the Africa Day celebration and assure you of my support and presence, God willing,” he said.

The delegation also acknowledged the efforts of Her Royal Majesty, Ambassador (Dr.) Temitope Enitan Ogunwusi, who has been actively involved in youth empowerment initiatives, including events at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The visit concluded with the presentation of an official nomination plaque to the Ooni, symbolizing his new role as Grand Patron of Traditional Institutions in Africa. This recognition further cements the Ooni’s status as a key cultural and traditional figure dedicated to fostering unity and development across the continent.
