Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” will be buried today, August 30, 2024, in Lagos. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, was 72 years old.

The funeral service will be held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at Ikoyi Vault. The Service of Songs is scheduled from 10 AM to 12 PM, with the burial taking place from 2 PM to 4 PM.

Onyeka Onwenu was a gifted musician, actress, broadcaster, politician, and activist. Born on January 31, 1952, in Lagos, Nigeria, she gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s with her music, becoming known for hits like “Don’t Cry for Me” and “One Love.” Onwenu also made significant contributions to Nigerian cinema and television, starring in several films and television dramas. Her political career included serving as a member of the Nigerian Senate.

Onwenu’s activism focused on issues of gender equality and social justice, leaving a lasting impact on Nigerian culture and society. She is survived by two sons.
