As the 10th National Assembly marks its one-year anniversary, a startling revelation has emerged: 24 out of 109 senators have not sponsored a single bill since their inauguration on June 13, 2023.

This lack of legislative activity raises concerns about the effectiveness of these lawmakers in representing their constituents’ interests.

A review of the senators’ activities reveals that 279 bills were sponsored between July 13, 2023, and March 2024. The Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), tops the list with 23 bills, most of which originate from the Executive Arm of government.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North) follows closely with 17 bills. Other notable senators, such as Sani Musa (APC, Niger East) and Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West), have also made significant contributions with multiple bills sponsored.

Surprisingly, some prominent senators, including former governors Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) and Abdulaziz Yari (APC, Zamfara West), have not sponsored any bills.

They are joined by Senators Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe North), Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central), and 21 other lawmakers who have yet to propose any legislation.

This lack of legislative activity has sparked concerns among Nigerians, who expect their elected representatives to work tirelessly on their behalf. As the 10th National Assembly enters its second year, there are calls for these senators to step up their efforts and fulfill their constitutional duties.
