One person has been confirmed dead, several others injured, and 30 individuals, including the site manager, are still trapped after a mining pit collapsed in the Galkago community of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria.
The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba’arah, disclosed to newsmen in Minna that the mining pit collapsed on Monday afternoon.
“Thirty persons, including the site manager Ibrahim Isyaku, are still trapped in the collapsed pit,” Baba’arah stated. He added that the rescue operation is complicated by the presence of bandits in the general mining area.
Authorities have deployed excavators to the site to remove debris and rescue those trapped. Shiroro Local Government is known for its abundant gold deposits but is also an epicenter of banditry and terrorism activities in Niger State.
