Nigerian model Olajumoke Orisaguna, popularly known as “Olajumoke Onibread,” has opened up about her harrowing experience with domestic violence, which she claims derailed her once-promising career.
Olajumoke, who rose to fame in 2016 after accidentally walking into a photoshoot with British rapper Tinie Tempah, photographed by Nigerian photographer TY Bello, shared her story during an interview on City FM.
The former bread hawker turned model recounted how her marital challenges with ex-husband Sunday Orisaguna began during their time in Ire, Osun State. She described enduring a “hostile” environment, which included mistreatment by her mother-in-law and alleged physical abuse by Sunday.
After relocating to Lagos in search of better opportunities, Olajumoke’s life took a dramatic turn when she stumbled into the now-famous photoshoot. The encounter catapulted her into stardom, securing her modeling gigs and endorsements. However, she said the abuse persisted, even after her career began to flourish.
“Even in the house rented for me in Surulere, he would still beat me up,” Olajumoke revealed. She added that societal pressures and the stigma of separation kept her silent about the abuse for years.
Olajumoke also alleged that Sunday’s behavior negatively impacted her career after their separation. According to her, he worked to tarnish her reputation and spread falsehoods about her and her supporters.
“It got so bad that he would even insult my parents,” she said. “After the separation, everything started going downhill because he began spoiling my name.”
The mother of two admitted that despite being the family’s breadwinner, she endured years of physical and emotional abuse, which took a toll on her personal and professional life.
Olajumoke’s story sheds light on the struggles many women face in abusive relationships, particularly in a society where separation often carries heavy stigma.
This revelation comes nearly four years after the couple’s separation, marking a somber chapter in the life of the once-celebrated model.
