The Ogun State government has denied claims that it has endorsed a specific candidate for the traditional throne of Awujale of Ijebuland, stressing that it remains neutral in the ongoing selection process.
The government said that reports suggesting it favoured one aspirant over others were inaccurate and misleading, and emphasised that the selection of a monarch is a matter for the kingmakers and relevant traditional authorities, not the state government.
Officials maintained that the state’s position is to respect the customs and procedures of Ijebuland’s traditional institutions, and reiterated that no political interference should influence the choice of the next Awujale.
They urged members of the public and media to disregard any claims of government endorsement, saying such reports only fuel unnecessary tension and speculation among stakeholders.
The clarification came amid discussions and interest surrounding several contestants vying for the revered stool, including those whose candidacies have attracted public attention.
The Ogun State government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding peace and supporting the process in a manner that honours tradition and promotes unity within Ijebuland.
