A Nigerian Navy officer, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, tragically lost his life during a rescue operation that saved 59 individuals aboard the dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, near the Okpobo River in Rivers State.
The vessel, contracted by Sterling Global Oil Limited, was in distress and at risk of sinking due to turbulent conditions on July 30, 2024.
The Nigerian Navy, led by Lt. Cdr Gwaza, responded to a distress call and deployed a rescue team from the Forward Operating Base BONNY. Despite challenging conditions, including powerful waves, the rescue mission was successful, with all 59 crew members saved.
However, Lt. Cdr Gwaza accidentally fell overboard during the operation and paid the ultimate price.
The Navy’s spokesperson, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, praised the bravery and sacrifice of Lt. Cdr Gwaza, describing him as a well-trained combat diver whose dedication to duty ensured the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The rescue operation lasted approximately 10 hours, with additional support provided by the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, helicopters, and reinforcement boats.
