The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has suspended a palace queen, a chief and other staff members over the unauthorised visit of social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, to the royal palace.

The Benin Traditional Council described the incident as a serious breach of protocol and a desecration of the palace, stressing that the premises are governed by strict traditional rules and are not open to unauthorised visitors.

A chief implicated in the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member was detained by the police and charged for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised access.

The queen involved in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which may lead to her removal from the palace in accordance with Benin customs and traditions.

The council said the influencer gained access to the palace without proper approval, causing embarrassment and disruption within the sacred environment.

Authorities have summoned him to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions, warning that failure to comply could result in legal action.

The palace has also introduced stricter measures, including mandatory identification for staff and visitors, to prevent future breaches and maintain the sanctity of the royal institution.
