Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, 27, has been placed in an induced coma following urgent surgery to treat a serious abdominal injury sustained during the Premier League match against Leicester City. The injury occurred in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw at the City Ground on Sunday when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost while attempting to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga.

Awoniyi underwent the first phase of surgery on Monday night and remains hospitalized, with a second procedure scheduled for Wednesday. The club released a statement confirming that he is “recovering well” after the operation. The induced coma is intended to aid his recovery by restricting movement and regulating his heart rate.

After the injury on the pitch, Awoniyi received treatment and initially continued playing, but he appeared to be struggling when the match resumed. He had only been on the field for about five minutes, having come on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare.

The handling of Awoniyi’s injury during the game sparked controversy, leading to Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis storming onto the pitch after the final whistle to confront manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis expressed frustration over a miscommunication between the bench and medical staff regarding the striker’s condition and the decision to keep him on the field.

Awoniyi’s injury is a significant blow to Nottingham Forest, who are currently competing for a Champions League qualification spot with two games remaining in the Premier League season. The striker has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign, and concerns have been raised about the impact of this latest injury on his future career at the club.

The club and fans alike are hoping for a full recovery as Awoniyi continues his treatment in hospital.
