The Nigeria Police Force has introduced the Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR), a new innovation aimed at modernizing vehicle information verification and tracking, especially in cases of theft.

In a statement released via his X handle on Thursday, September 19, 2024, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi detailed the advantages of the E-CMR system, emphasizing that it will reduce the need for manual checks by officers. “No more stopping to check papers—our officers are equipped with cutting-edge technology to verify documents in real-time,” Adejobi explained.

The E-CMR also enables vehicle owners to report stolen vehicles instantly through their online profiles. “When a vehicle registered with the NPF E-CMR gets stolen, you can instantly flag it as stolen through your online profile, and it will be recovered,” Adejobi assured the public.

This innovation follows the directive from Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun in July to enforce a fully digitalized motor vehicle registration system. According to Egbetokun, the move is intended to improve Nigeria’s safety and security framework by modernizing motor vehicle registration.

The E-CMR promises to streamline vehicle document verification and offer real-time responses, improving overall road safety and reducing vehicle theft across the country.
