Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, has clarified that there are currently no merger agreements with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party.
Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Obi stated, “No agreement has been established with other parties yet.” He called for unity among opposition parties, urging all lovers of Nigeria in the political space to work together for the 2027 elections to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi accused the APC-led government of poor resource management and criticized the current administration for insecurity, corruption, and unnecessary governance expenses. He remarked, “The level of corruption in Nigeria remains high, and so is the cost of governance, which has led to an astronomical increase in public debt under the current administration.”
He also pointed out the misuse of public funds in 2024, saying, “Government officials willfully mismanaged public funds through incessant foreign travels.”
The call for unity comes in the wake of the 2023 presidential election, where Bola Tinubu of the APC won with 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Obi of the LP garnered 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes, respectively. NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso secured 1,496,687 votes, winning only in Kano State.
Obi and Kwankwaso, both former PDP members, had exited the party due to irreconcilable differences. Obi’s remarks reflect his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s challenges and building a stronger opposition ahead of 2027.
