The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced plans to engage reputable Operations and Maintenance (O&M) companies to manage the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company.
The announcement was made in a statement on Friday, August 30, 2024 via NNPCL’s official X handle.
The Warri refinery, commissioned in 1978, is a complex conversion refinery with a nameplate distillation capacity of 125,000 barrels per day (bpd).
It includes a petrochemical plant producing 13,000 metric tons per annum (MTA) of polypropylene and 18,000 MTA of carbon black. This refinery is designated to serve the south and southwest regions of Nigeria.
The Kaduna refinery, commissioned in 1980 to serve northern Nigeria, originally had a capacity of 50,000 bpd. Over the years, its capacity was expanded to 110,000 bpd with the addition of a second crude train for producing lubricating oils and further expansions.
The move to hand over these refineries to private operators is seen as part of NNPCL’s efforts to improve their operational efficiency and productivity.
