The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is set to enhance the country’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure by acquiring equipment for 40 new CNG stations nationwide. This initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to establish around 100 CNG stations within the next six months.

Oluwagbemi Michael, the Programme Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), made this announcement during an event in Ogun State. He highlighted that NNPC has successfully set up 12 CNG centers over the past year, with six located in Abuja and six in Lagos.

Amid public concerns about the limited number of CNG stations, Michael assured that steps are being taken to expand infrastructure. He disclosed that approximately N122 billion has been allocated to six private companies investing in the CNG distribution sector. “Infrastructure development takes time, but we are actively working on it,” he stated.

NNPC aims to increase the number of CNG stations from the current 50 to 100 within the next six months. The initiative also includes distributing one million CNG conversion kits to commercial drivers, which is expected to create an additional 1.5 million demands for CNG across Nigeria. Michael emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting CNG adoption, stating, “CNG is safer and cheaper.”

He also confirmed that existing petrol stations could be upgraded to CNG refueling stations, facilitating a smoother transition for users. To address cost concerns for vehicle conversions, a credit scheme is being implemented, allowing individuals to finance the conversion process gradually.

Despite the current infrastructure challenges, the PCNGI director remains optimistic that CNG will soon be accessible throughout Nigeria, fostering a shift toward this alternative fuel source.
